Demolition

there comes a time

when everything falls

if we don’t tear it down first

it sits and waits

going about its business

so unaware         so innocent

of its future fate

like a graceful swan

in the park pond

a cruel bullet ripping

through its snow-white chest

in a spray of crimson

scattering her feathers

to heaven

like a person’s personal triumphs

stabbed repeatedly

like the butcher’s Cimer knife

carving through raw meat

like a wren shot

off a hanging branch

her song still trailing

in its fatal descent

hitting the ground hard

so now she sings a

symphony of silence

like an old building set

for scheduled demolition

and a small spider on a wall

(with all eight eyes)

looks up long enough

to watch the roof

crash down on her

there comes a time

when we should just

leave everything alone
